Dear KAREN,
This August, Hurricane Ida crashed into the Gulf Coast, wreaking havoc on people's homes and wildlife habitats alike. The devastation continued in the days that followed:
the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's satellites detected at least 55 oil spills in the Gulf, including one near a fragile nature reserve. Ida wasn't the first storm with such a far-reaching impact, and if climate change keeps accelerating, it certainly won't be the last. That's why we're calling on the Audubon community to flock together this Giving Tuesday:
Join 301 of your fellow bird lovers in starting a monthly gift before midnight tonight, and you'll help secure an additional $100,000 in pivotal funding for birds. When Ida tore through the Gulf of Mexico, it came as a herald of things to come. With climate change on the rise, powerful storms and extreme weather are a growing threat. And in places like the Gulf, that will lead to even more oil spills and even more disasters for birds and wildlife.
When spills happen, sensitive ecosystems get swamped in toxic sludge, and it can take years, if not decades, to recover. For proof, look to the Deepwater Horizon explosion: It happened a decade ago, and though Audubon and other conservation groups have undertaken huge efforts to help, the effects are still taking a toll on the region's birds and wildlife.
It's up to us to chart a different course, KAREN. With more than 100 years of experience, Audubon knows how to take on the most challenging issues confronting birds.
With you at our side, we'll continue our work to restore and preserve vital landscapes like the Gulf Coast. We'll fight for laws like the Migratory Bird Treaty Act that protect birds from threats like oil spills. And we'll push harder than ever to give birds the stable climate they need—which includes turning away from oil and gas and the many dangers of drilling.
Giving Tuesday is a time to protect the things we care about, and it's a reminder that, when we come together, we can tackle even the toughest threats to birds. But we can't do it without you.
Please do your best for birds this Giving Tuesday: Start a steadfast monthly gift, and help us rise to this challenge and earn an extra $100,000 for birds. This giving challenge ends at midnight tonight, so don't miss this chance to help more than ever before.
Sincerely,
The National Audubon Society
