But history repeats itself time and time again because accidents happen with appalling regularity wherever drilling takes place. This year it was California and Louisiana—and many other places that didn't make nationwide news—but no drilling site is truly safe. The threats to birds are both immediate and long term: Immediate in the destruction of lands and waters that vulnerable species call home; but long term, too, because our dependence on oil hastens climate change, which threatens two thirds of our bird species with extinction. But it doesn't have to be this way, KAREN. We're working to prevent future catastrophes by keeping drilling out of sensitive habitats, making landscapes as resilient as possible, and fighting to strengthen conservation laws like the Migratory Bird Treaty Act to hold industries accountable. And we're pushing for greener energy, which is better for birds and people—and reduces both the risk of spills and the threat of climate change.
