Dear KAREN,
In 2010, in the aftermath of Deepwater Horizon, it was hard to imagine the Gulf Coast ever being safe for wildlife again. Thanks to the tireless work of conservationists, laws like the Migratory Bird Treaty Act that helped hold BP accountable, and the support of bird lovers like you, birds like the Brown Pelican have made inspiring recoveries.
But their safety is incredibly fragile—and this summer, it was threatened yet again by Hurricane Ida. To truly protect birds in the face of such complex threats, we need to take bold action. We know we can do this—but our best efforts depend on you.
Please start your monthly gift right away in honor of Giving Tuesday, while your generosity can help unlock an extra $100,000 in much-needed funds. As long as there is oil and gas drilling, there will be oil spills. It's inevitable. And as climate change, only worsened by fossil fuel extraction, drives more severe storms, the likelihood of major accidents will increase dramatically—with birds bearing the consequences. In Ida's wake, at least 55 such spills were detected, ranging dangerously close to a fragile nature reserve.
It's not enough to rescue birds and clean up habitats after oil spills happen. It can take years for an ecosystem to recover from such accidents, and new spills can undo all that hard work in a moment.
We need a major course correction: away from reliance on fossil fuels, and toward a more resilient climate future.
Throughout our 100-year history, Audubon has shown that when
bird lovers come together we can achieve critical wins for birds. We've brought birds like the Brown Pelican back from endangered status. And though the threats birds face today is greater than any we've taken on in the past, together, with you at our side, we
can and
will rise to the challenge.
Are you with us, KAREN?
Join your fellow bird lovers this Giving Tuesday and make a dependable monthly gift to protect the birds you love. We still need 163 more monthly donors to join us before midnight tonight. When this special $100,000 giving challenge ends, we hope you'll be one of them.
Thank you for all you do to protect birds, today and tomorrow.
Sincerely,
The National Audubon Society
