Dear KAREN,
Birds like the Brown Pelican are no stranger to the dangers of oil spills. In the aftermath of the Deepwater Horizon disaster, unprecedented numbers of birds got caught in oil slicks. Tragically, many died—more than a million birds in total were ultimately lost.
Now, more than ten years later, Hurricane Ida gave us painful proof that the danger of oil spills is more acute than ever, with at least 55 such events detected in the Gulf in the wake of the storm.
And that means we can't waste a moment as we work for birds' safest future. This Giving Tuesday, birds are counting on you, KAREN.
Will you rise to the challenge and start a monthly gift today? Today is your last chance to help unlock an additional $100,000 in support for birds.
Given that even a small amount of oil can be deadly for a bird, spills on the scale we saw with Deepwater Horizon, or just months ago after Hurricane Ida, can be catastrophic for birds. Since the BP disaster, Audubon has guided restoration efforts to protect and restore habitat where birds can thrive. But every new spill poses new threats and sets back birds' survival
And while Hurricane Ida is fresh in our minds, it's no isolated incident: Oil accidents happen with appalling regularity, wherever fossil fuel activities take place. In a world with accelerating climate change and severe weather on the rise, those accidents will only grow more frequent.
Your monthly gift will provide dependable support, month after month, for Audubon's full range of conservation work, all of which birds need in the face of such urgent dangers. You'll make possible our most persuasive advocacy to reduce drilling and development, our expert preservation and restoration of vital ecosystems, our most committed support for strong conservation laws and policies, and our urgent action to help halt climate change.
With the combined might of the Audubon community, together we can change the course of birds' future. But a challenge this big will take all of us, which is why we're calling on you today. Don't miss this chance to help unlock $100,000 for birds:
Start your monthly gift today, before midnight, and do your very best for birds this Giving Tuesday. Sincerely,
The National Audubon Society
