My son thinks I look very funny, and says I am "doing the sarcophagus".
Humour aside... and I do realize it does look a bit goofy!
Just as the baby sleeps often because of the novelty of being and moving in gravity, we DO NEED to rest after a Feldenkrais® lesson.
How long to rest is an individual choice.
If you have a great deal of novelty in your movement lesson, the body needs time to process and integrate the learning. Most of the clients I see are asking, and needing change in the way they move.
The way a person moves often reflects how he/she/they feels about themself. That change of movement can require a shift in self image.
This can be tiring but also very rewarding and liberating.
"I feel 10 years younger." "This lightness of body feels very nice but strange." "I feel like a weight has lifted off my shoulders." "I can't remember not hearing my knees click. This is new." "I feel hopeful."
This newness is candy for our brains. It stimulates new connections and new awareness, however the new connections are fragile. Like cutting a new pathway through a forest, it needs to be trod over a few times for the pathway to be found again.
This is why resting after a treatment is a very productive activity, recalling the session, and recalling the sensations help us review that new fresh pathway.
It is an investment to your health journey. It is the advice I give all my clients. However, you don't need to "do the sarcophagus"! Rest well and do it your way!
