It will be less rich for the loss of the 11 bird species declared extinct this fall. But for many other birds, there's still time to prevent the unthinkable. There's no denying that we're in the midst of a bird emergency. Having lost 3 billion birds in the past 50 years, and with more newly extinct species announced this year than ever before, the outlook is grim. Science shows that a staggering 389 birds out of 604—two-thirds of all North American birds—could face extinction from climate change in the coming decades. But science also gives us solutions. We know there are birds we can still help, and we know which ones can benefit most from your support: Birds like the Golden-cheeked Warbler, which has lost much of its limited range to development. With the right protection, conservation, and restoration of the habitat it depends on, it can bounce back—and other birds can, too. Audubon won't stop fighting for birds. By defending key conservation laws like the Endangered Species Act and Migratory Bird Treaty Act, by fighting climate change, and by carrying out expert on-the-ground conservation, we're doing all we can to give birds the future they deserve.
