KAREN, a code-red crisis is unfolding before our eyes: Since 1970, we’ve lost three billion birds—one in every four—and the latest data from the 2025 State of the Birds report shows these declines are continuing across all habitats. 112 bird species, including the beloved Allen’s Hummingbird, are at a “Tipping Point,” having lost 50% or more of their populations in the past 50 years. They’re now one of 42 Red Alert birds—species with perilously low populations and steeply declining trends.
Birds are already suffering from the climate crisis—and the impacts will worsen unless we reduce emissions and protect critical habitats. But hope lies in action, and we have 120 years of practical, effective solutions. Using our proven combination of committed advocacy, empowering education, and expert on-the-ground conservation—all guided by research and grounded in our shared love for birds—we’ve been able to help many bird populations recover. And together with committed bird lovers like you, we’ll continue to defend the laws that protect birds at risk, keep important landscapes and waters resilient, and fight for the bold climate action birds need.
