What a delight to be invited to teach at the Evolve Fitness Studio in Fort Erie!
The studio is keen to help people improve their functional movement patterns and they do it by offering Pilates, Yoga and Essentrics Classes.... and now Feldenrkrais!
I was so pleased to meet everyone and hear what they wanted to learn. The common theme was "Curious". Feldenkrais folks just LOVE that word!
When someone is "just curious", they are ready and open to learn and discover something novel within themselves. This state of mind leads to delight and finding that their body has access to a different way of being, which often leads us to those sweet AHA moments .
"I am feeling my breathing in places I didn't notice before." "I didn't realize how much space I have to breathe." " I am letting my chest move, and this helps me feel calmer." Could you sense this now?....
During a calm breath, if the diaphragm is working correctly, the chest will deepen front to back,
the lower ribs will widen as the diaphragm descends,
the abdomen will expand and the back will move backward. In other words, if you had a balloon filling your torso from the collarbones to your hip crest all these parts will move evenly and at the same time generally. If this happens there is no involvement of the neck muscles, and the shoulder blades. Rather then a lifting or lowering movement you will feel a general expansion in all directions during inhale and a deflation during the exhale.
After the workshop there are often feelings and thoughts that are simmering under the surface. Perhaps unformed, your curiousity is working it out subconsciously. I am offering a free Q&A on Sunday at 2:30pm Although this free Zoom meet up is directed toward the most recent Art and Science of Breathing students, students from the previous workshops are very welcome!
I look forward to your thoughts, new insights, aha moments, and questions! OR just drop in to say Hello!
