Native Plants for Birds Edition
Dear KAREN,

I transformed my lawn into a native plant garden and was utterly amazed by what happened next.

While my neighbor's lawn attracted an occasional pecking crow, my garden became a birding hotspot with an abundant diversity of kinglets, towhees, chickadees, warblers, titmice, and waxwings.

It really worked! How did that happen?

Native birds co-evolved with native plants so they produce fruit, seeds, and nectar that match their nutritional needs. They host insects such as caterpillars which feed the chicks of 96 percent of native birds. Native oak trees are home to more than 200 species of wasps!

A native plant is like a supermarket with an abundance of food, whereas non-native plants are like convenience stores. Birds will always choose the better meal.

Join us in choosing native plants and bring birds closer to home.

Sincerely,

Gaylon Parsons
Interim Executive Director
