Dear KAREN,

Catastrophes like this don't have to happen: After months of extreme weather in the summer of 2020, throngs of migratory waterbirds seeking rest and refueling were forced to cram together in the few pools of hot, stagnant water that remained in the Lower Klamath National Wildlife Refuge. A perfect setting for the spread of disease, it was there that a massive outbreak of avian botulism killed 40,000 birds—the worst outbreak in 40 years.

Audubon's work for birds has never been more vital. By speaking up to secure the abundant clean water they need, we're creating a safer future for birds. We can prevent losses like these. But we need your help.

That's why, ahead of World Water Day, we're asking dedicated bird lovers like you to step up and start a monthly donation today. Your new gift will help unlock an additional $15,000 for birds through this limited-time giving challenge. So please be one of 125 friends we need right away.

At a time when we've already lost 3 billion birds in the past 50 years and two-thirds of North American species are at risk of climate extinction, the stakes couldn't be higher.

Fortunately, Audubon's advocacy for birds is powerful and effective as we keep sustainable water management at the forefront of our work. With support from people like you, we are leading the way to ensure clean water and watery habitats for birds by:
  • Securing water for the drying Great Salt Lake—a first in Utah water rights history
  • Restoring water flow in the Colorado River Delta, providing an oasis in the midst of the Sonoran Desert for birds and the people who live there
  • Implementing sustainable on-the-ground habitat restoration projects to address habitat loss and degradation in places such as California's Central Valley and the Salton Sea
…and much more, everywhere we work, across North America.
Now, as we approach World Water Day, we must recommit ourselves to this critical work. We're counting on 125 supporters to start a monthly donation today and help unlock $15,000 more to protect birds and their habitats. So please, make your dependable monthly gift today.

Sincerely,

The National Audubon Society
