Sign the Pledge Shorebirds like the Wilson's Plover use beaches to nest and raise their chicks. Dear KAREN, If you think finding the perfect spot at the beach is tough, imagine being a bird that is just three inches tall looking for a safe, undisturbed patch of sand to hatch your eggs while thousands of loud humans are running around playing Frisbee or volleyball. Over the last 50+ years, seabird and shorebird populations have plummeted by a shocking 70%. But we have the power to turn the tide if we all work together to share the shore and give birds the space they need to nest, rest, and feed. For coastal birds, our beaches aren't a vacation spot; they’re home. Seabirds and shorebirds rely on our coasts for their migratory pit stops and nesting grounds. But with beach season in full swing, even the smallest disturbances can flush protective parents away from their nests, leaving vulnerable eggs and chicks exposed to the scorching sun and predators.   Together, we can make the coast safer. By committing to simple, bird-friendly beach habits—like giving nesting areas a wide berth and keeping dogs leashed—we can co-exist with the birds we love.
