Birds are losing nesting habitat by the second as wildfires rage across the western US.
NAME: KAREN SHARP GIVING CHALLENGE STATUS: Unconfirmed GIVING CHALLENGE DEADLINE: MIDNIGHT TONIGHT | | 33 new monthly donors needed to save birds | | | | Dear KAREN, As the western US burns, Northern Spotted Owls are rapidly losing the viable habitat necessary to raise their young. Fueled by intense heat and unrelenting drought, today's wildfires are larger, more intense, and faster-moving than those that birds evolved alongside. And when they're finally extinguished, there's no suitable nesting habitat left. And it's not just forest resident birds that are impacted by these megafires. Migratory songbirds such as Western Tanagers and Yellow Warblers are impacted when their stopover habitats are destroyed by air pollution caused by the fire's massive smoke clouds. That's why we're making every effort to ensure a more hopeful future for birds—and you can help. Will you join Audubon as a reliable monthly supporter today, and help safeguard birds from these horrific conditions? We have an urgent need for 33 new monthly donors to help us unlock $5,000, thanks to a generous group of donors. Will you be one of them? Rising temperatures and shifting rainfall patterns are making high-speed, uncontrollable fires increasingly common—and North American bird species, two-thirds of which are already threatened with extinction due to a changing climate—are paying the price. KAREN, we know that these megafires pose a serious risk to people as well as birds. And with your support, we'll protect and restore climate-resilient landscapes and key habitats, and advocate for a shift to clean energy and a reduction of carbon emissions—all of which will minimize the risk of more historic fires down the road. Our efforts will pay off for birds and for people. Just this past year, we led efforts to: - Advocate for the Inflation Reduction Act
- Restore and strengthen the Migratory Bird Treaty Act
- Support bipartisan federal climate legislation
- Secure water for a critical network of saline lakes
- End "Use it or Lose it" water management in Arizona
....and much more. Audubon sees a future where Northern Spotted Owls—and all birds—have safe and plentiful nesting areas to raise their young. We're going all in to make that vision a reality—but we can't do it without you. We still need 33 new monthly donors to unlock $5,000 in critical funding, so please start your reliable monthly gift today to amplify your impact. Thank you for all you do to keep birds safe. Sincerely, National Audubon Society | | | | |
