Water is Life

Dear KAREN,

Water is life—for people, birds, and nature. During World Water Week, we celebrate the vital waterways of the Central Valley, San Francisco Bay, and Salton Sea that are essential for millions of birds along the Pacific Flyway. Together, we will ensure our waters are resilient, clean, and equitable sources of life. During extreme drought, every drop counts.

Documentary Film: Cutting-Edge Science in the Central Valley
The Central Valley is one of the most important places in the world for migratory birds. A new short film from the Central Valley Joint Venture gives a behind-the-scenes look at the conservation science and collaboration between nineteen organizations, including Audubon California, that are working together to protect water for birds in the Central Valley.

Under Construction: Massive Bird Habitat at the Salton Sea
State officials are currently creating an enormous wetland habitat at the southern end of the Salton Sea. This massive project, called the "Species Conservation Habitat Project", covers 4,100 acres and will provide habitat for millions of migratory birds that depend on the sea. With the drying of the Colorado River and the shrinking Salton Sea, this project is increasingly urgent to prevent ecological collapse.

California is Leading on Sustainable Groundwater Laws. Now, We Need to Walk the Talk.
Over the past decade, California has gone from being the state with the least groundwater regulation to adopting a law that serves as an international model. How the state implements its landmark groundwater law during California's worst drought on record could inform global climate change adaptation practices for generations.

What the Historic Inflation Reduction Act Means for Water in the West
The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 is a historic surge of federal investment to confront the climate crisis. The new law provides unprecedented levels of funding for renewable energy, climate resilience, agriculture, forestry, and environmental justice initiatives. In addition, $4 billion was included to address the ongoing drought in the West. Audubon's advocacy was instrumental in championing this investment in western water.
