“Immediate conservation needed for birds that have experienced the steepest population losses.” That’s how the 2025 State of the Birds report characterized the situation facing 112 birds who have lost more than half of their populations in the last 50 years. Out of these, the Spotted Owl and 32 other species are categorized as Yellow Alert Tipping Point Species—having experienced long-term population losses and requiring continued conservation efforts to sustain recovery. At a time when one-third of U.S. bird species are in need of conservation action, we must urgently soar to their defense.

Please start a monthly donation right away to give the birds the protection they need—not just today but tomorrow, too. Thanks to a group of generous donors your first gift ahead of Earth Day could be matched, up to $400,000, to bring birds back from the brink.

As birds decline, so too does the health of the ecosystems we rely on for clean water, food, and climate resilience. But we are not without hope, KAREN: Urgent action now can reverse these declines and build a more resilient, healthier future for all. That’s why we’re responding to the greatest challenges facing birds and people today while anticipating the issues and opportunities of tomorrow. With caring friends like you by our side, we remain focused on birds because we know their collective health reflects the health of our planet—and what’s good for birds is good for the Earth.
So, in the midst of this code-red crisis, we’re asking: Will you do your best for birds in the spirit of Earth Day? Please start your monthly gift today while your first gift could go 2X as far.

Sincerely,

National Audubon Society
