Terns are mesmerizing. Watching them hover over the water and dive for fish is a highlight of any beach visit. But can you tell which tern turned your head?

Telling terns apart requires a keen eye for detail, as most species appear to have a black cap, white and gray body, long pointy bill, and behave in similar ways. Here's our guide to identifying North America's four big terns: Caspian, Royal, Elegant, and Sandwich.
